The Story of Valentine's Day
The Origins of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a special day that has been celebrated for centuries. It is believed to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia, which was held on February 15th every year. During this festival, young men and women would draw names from a box to determine who their partners would be for the duration of the festival. This practice is thought to have been adopted by Christians and given the name “Valentine’s Day” in honour of Saint Valentine, who was martyred in Rome in the 3rd century.
Valentine's Day in the Middle Ages
Valentine’s Day was mostly celebrated during the Middle Ages. During this time, it was believed that birds chose their mates on February 14th. This was the inspiration for the expression “lovebirds”. It was also during this period that the tradition of exchanging love letters and cards on Valentine’s Day began. People would write poems and love letters to their partners expressing their love and devotion.
The Modern Day Celebration
Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world and has evolved into an international holiday. It is celebrated in many different ways, from exchanging gifts and cards to romantic dinners and dates. It is also a popular time for weddings, engagements, and other special occasions. Although the traditional symbols of love such as hearts and cupids are still popular, other symbols such as chocolates, roses, and teddy bears are now also associated with Valentine’s Day.
Valentine's Day and Social Media
In recent years, Valentine’s Day has become even more popular with the rise of social media. It has become commonplace to post photos and messages of love on social media sites such as Instagram and Twitter. Hashtags such as #ValentinesDay and #LoveStory have become popular on these platforms and are used to share stories of love, friendship, and appreciation.
Celebrating Valentine's Day
No matter how you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s a great opportunity to show your loved ones how much they mean to you. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, exchanging gifts, posting a heartfelt message on social media, or simply sending a card, there are many ways to make this special day even more meaningful.
